Five Questions for Your Friday

Today is Friday (as if I needed to point that out?) I don’t know about you, but my brain is ready to be done for a few days so I’m going to try to make this easy.  I’ve done Friday Fives before but now I think I’ll specifically feature food related and cooking questions. If you have questions you might like to add to the list, please email them to me!

Last week was fun! This week’s sort of theme is Travel!

  1. What type of food (or drink) is your area well known for? Do you enjoy it?
  2. If I came to visit, what local place would you be sure to take me to? Why?
  3. Where would you like to travel to in order to try the local cuisine? (Say, more than a 3 hour drive or flight)
  4. Have you gone back to a place just for the food? (Say, more than a 3 hour drive, just for a specific food item) Where did you go? What was it?
  5. What trip (vacation or business) had the best food? Where did you go? What did you love?

Change it up!

I don’t know if you know, but I’m trying to get back in the healthy eating game and to shed some of these pounds I’ve put on over the last year. If you’re inclined, you can follow me here with it.This post was originally over there.

One of the things I dislike about getting back on the healthy eating train is that I find myself eating the same things over and over again if I’m not careful. This is because a) I’m lazy about making lunch and what not and b) once you’ve got some good food that you like with good numbers, it can be hard to change things.

But then I get bored and want to have something different or exciting. (Which equates often to me eating out, eating food that doesn’t represent the best choices and is generally WAY too much.

What’s a girl to do?

Here are a few ways I make myself think I’m changing it up:

  1. Heat it up! Seriously, 20 seconds in the microwave and my lean meat, mustard or peanut sauce and cheese on a sandwich round takes on a whole new flavor. (If you’re a mayo and veggie on the sandwich fan, put these on AFTER it gets heated.) The flavors mix in a totally different way and it tastes more decadent once it’s been heated.
  2. Spice it up! A sprinkle of Adobo or Emeril’s, a hint of garlic or whatever your favorite spice happens to be on your sandwich, in your whole wheat pasta, or salad can totally change your lunch. One of my favorite salad “dressings” is a ginger rosemary blend on the salad with a little pepper and white vinegar drizzled over it. Just a bit. So yummy! If it’s your favorite to cook with, try a little on your lunch.
  3. Alternate what you’re having. Sometimes I bring a sandwich, sometimes left overs, sometimes leftovers on a sandwich (zucchini and mushrooms with Gouda on a sandwich round anyone? SO GOOD). Go crazy, but be honest with yourself about how much you’re eating.
  4. Piece it together. Sick of sandwiches? How about a yogurt with sliced fruit mixed in and some whole wheat crackers? A toasted English muffin, with tomatoes and string cheese?

Give it a whirl. What can it hurt? What do you do to change it up?

Sharing is Caring – Cinnamon Raisin Braided Twists

Welcome to Sharing is Caring Thursday where I will share a post from someone else’s blog, site or news with you and give some of my thoughts on it too. You might recall that I cook and feed people as a way to show my love for them so I’m looking at this as a way to continue showing my love for others.

Previously, I’ve been a huge fan of the Rold Gold Honey Wheat braided pretzel sticks for a crunchy little snack during the day. They’re tasty and not too bad on the numbers with a slightly sweet, slightly salty bit of goodness. I was out of them the other day and looking for them in the store when I found these instead.

rold-gold-cinnamon-raisinCinnamon Raisin Braided Twists. Yep. I was a little skeptical, but I figured, why not? If they sucked, I could take them to work and share. Someone at work always eats whatever we bring in.

Here’s the thing. They didn’t suck. In fact, in my taste buds estimation, they were DELICIOUS!. You do taste the cinnamon first off and while it’s not subtle, it’s not overpowering. You’re aware of the light salt on the pretzel and the crunch but, then you taste the sweetness of the raisin, just a little. What I did not expect was the buttery flavor that finishes off the pretzel!

It really adds a little something extra.

For my morning nosh, I paired dipped them in my Vanilla Greek Yogurt and it was such a wonderful little way to get me through until lunch time.

If you’re looking for a little nosh do try them, but be warned, you’ll want to eat a good portion of the bag!

As you know, I’m bringing some more features to this little corner of the internet and I was hoping you’d help me out with something.

I want to start a Crock Pot Cooking series and I don’t feel that “Crock Pot Cooking” is a good title. It just doesn’t feel right!

Ready, set, GO!

New Ideas are Cooking

Pardon the pun, I get such a kick out of them, but I’ll try not to use them.

Now that we’re getting settled into the new place and it’s starting to cool off a bit, not only am I cooking again, but Frank is starting too! I have so much to share and ideas I want to get into that I can’t wait to start.

In the coming weeks (as it gets cooler again and I cook and bake more) I hope to get back on a track that includes the following:

  • Cooking with Kids – Just like it says, I’ll be cooking or baking with some of the munchkins in my life. (I started this already when my much younger cousins came to visit and we made Smores Brownies. (Ignore the foil in the photo. It was an idea that didn’t work. Much tweaking to come.)
  • Helpful Hints – I’ve been doing them here and there, but have a lot more to share. Previously shared Helpful Hints are here.
  • Yummy & Quick – Some nights, you just want to have something to eat that feels like more than a sandwich or a bowl of cereal. Previously shared Yummy & Quick posts are here
  • Sharing is Caring – One of the reasons I blog is because I LOVE so share and get feedback on what I’m doing. This is where I’ll share someone else’s work, product, or idea for the day. Previous Sharing is Caring posts can be found here.

I have a few other ideas up my sleeve that I have to get an OK on or work out further before I let you in on them (one of them being Cooking with Frank and another being experimental food stuff).

Sharing is Caring – Luna Bars

A bit ago I was looking for a way to boost my protein intake that was easy to carry and I discovered Luna Bars. Not only are they a great after workout snack, but they help get me through the afternoon stretch between lunch and the end of the day (or breakfast and lunch for that matter!)

Added bonus, they fit my “rule” that the food that I eat has to have nutritional value or be ridiculously delicious. Luna Bars have calcium, Folic acid and various vitamins. They are specifically geared towards women. (Although my boyfriend has eaten them before in a pinch. He liked them and they didn’t make his boobs grow so he’s happy.)

First, I tried the Peanut Butter one because I love almost all things Peanut Butter. Then I tried the Lemon Zest one because I do adore Lemon Zest as well. Slowly I moved my way through the different flavors.

The Smores bars are delicious, the White Chocolate Macadamia Nuts taste like a candy bar and the Chocolate Mint were a welcome taste for the holiday season. That said, I do believe that the Blueberry Bliss that I discovered the other day are in the running for my new favorite. blueberry

They seriously taste like a Blueberry Poptart, but better.

I’m always a little skeptical of  different fruit flavors, and by skeptical I shy away from most of them, but I was really very and pleasantly surprised by the deliciousness of this bar.

Do yourself a favor if you need a protein boost or are looking for a mid afternoon snack, pick up some of these! They also come in mini sizes for that little nosh between meals.

Have we become this lazy?

smores grahmI suppose the answer is yes, since this made it past product design and testing…

I was in the store the other day to pick up a few things and saw these. Honey Maid Squares.

Yep. Half a graham cracker marketed specifically for S’mores.

Really? Seriously When did we get too lazy to break the graham cracker in half so we could put the chocolate and melted marshmallow on it?

I didn’t see a price, but I’d put a whole dollar on the fact that they likely cost more than he regular box.

I for one will keep breaking my regular graham crackers in half. Thankyouverymuch.

So what’s the most lazy food item you’ve seen lately? (Easy Mac and other on the go meals non-withstanding, they make sense sometimes.)

No one paid for me to do this post and I think they’d probably be upset if they read it. Too bad, so sad.
